Designing cities of the future

Designing cities of the future
by Dr Koen Steemers, Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies, Cambridge University and M. Pascal Gontier, Lille School of Architecture, France.

Piscine olympique biotope. Pascal Gontier et equateur architectes.

How to build the ecological cities of the future? From energy efficient houses to more advanced projects such as a “biotope swimming-pool”, sustainability is the key for future urban development. Cities are complex ecosystems where strong interactions exist between the urban microclimate and the human well-being and quality of life. Understanding these relationships more deeply could provide new ways of organising the city and create a symbiosis between ecology and urban environment. Come and discover how the face of our cities could change in the next future!
